Ps William and Ps Albert speaking from Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 for Lunar New Year 2022. (Note this is a bilingual sermon)
[0:00] Thank you, worship team for just those wonderful worship songs about time.
[0:22] For those of you who I haven't met yet, my name is William. I'm one of the pastors here. Maybe this is a good time to wish you a happy new year.
[0:36] I wish you a happy new year. Thank you for joining us today in the lead up to the new year, or thank you if you're joining us on live stream as well.
[0:52] And I wonder how you are planning to celebrate this coming new year. This is a long-term year, we're going to celebrate this coming new year. Maybe some of you have a banquet with the relatives' plan.
[1:03] Maybe some of you wish you could be overseas right now. Or if you're in this time, I'm still in the home, or in other places, it's not good.
[1:14] So many of our plans have changed, haven't they? Even in this last week. Just as we thought things would get better with COVID, now we are under red light instead of red packets.
[1:30] We are thinking now of red light. We are thinking of red light. We thought it was a long-term year. We thought it was a long-term year. We thought it was a long-term year, but it was a long-term year. And I don't know what struggles you're going through this week.
[1:42] Maybe you're worrying about your children, whether they should go to school or uni. I don't know if you're worried about your children, whether they should go to school or uni.
[1:53] Maybe you are stressed about what happens if someone here catches COVID here in church. Or if we're in the same way, we're in the same way, then we're in the same way.
[2:05] And perhaps you've been wondering, oh, what bad timing. Or maybe you just think, when will all this time end? And it turns out that time is also on the mind of the teacher in one of the books of the Bible.
[2:23] In the Bible, in the Bible, we often often have a time. So as we begin a new year as a PCPC, I thought it would be timely to turn to the book of Ecclesiastes, this part of God's Word.
[2:36] So as we begin a new year as a PCPC, I thought it would be timely to turn to the book of Ecclesiastes, this part of God's Word. So at the beginning of the book of Ecclesiastes, we also open this全道書, this book. Let's see how the time is going to look at the book of Ecclesiastes. So turn, if you can, with us to the book of Ecclesiastes in your Bible.
[2:51] The 3rd of the book of Ecclesiastes, this part of the book of Ecclesiastes, this part of the book of Ecclesiastes. And I'll give you a moment to bring it up on your phones or at home. And perhaps if you are ready, we could perhaps read it together, maybe the first 11 verses of chapter 3.
[3:04] If you are on your phone or at home, you can read the book of Ecclesiastes. Then we'll open the book of Ecclesiastes, this part of the book of Ecclesiastes. Then we'll use the English language to read it together.
[3:18] Okay, let's read it together. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Let's read it together.
[4:14] 我叫神叫世人勞苦,使他們在其中受經驗神造萬物,各安其時,成為美好又將永生安置在世人心裡然而神從此至終的作為,人不能參透這是神的活動的言語這是上帝永恆的話語我們一起同心祈禱神多謝祢自己的話語當我們想在新一年的開始 please remind us again that there is a time for everything神提醒我們各樣都有定時 and help us to see, even in this book, the wisdom of Jesus for us我們看一下,開我們的眼睛去看到就算在傳道書裡面,我們看到耶穌基督的智慧 and we pray these things in Christ's name, Amen我們奉主耶穌基督的名靠, Amen
[5:17] Firstly, it might help if I mention briefly where we are in the Bible或者大家可以了解一下傳道書在哪裡呢? So the book of Ecclesiastes, this teaching that we call Ecclesiastes it comes straight after two books one is called the Psalms and one is called the Proverbs And collectively, these three books are often called the wisdom books And I think God gave us all three of these books because wisdom comes in lots of different ways, doesn't it?
For example, the way your grandmother might share wisdom to you might be different to your teacher And for example, the book of Psalms It invites us to sing along with the blessed person who is walking a righteous path Through ups and downs, joys and sorrows So that's wisdom through the Psalms
[6:59] But then the book of Proverbs is a bit different But it still teaches us wisdom instead It teaches us how life normally works in God's world And how to live in the fear of the Lord We could imagine the book of Psalms like headphones we listen to Maybe the book of Proverbs are like little lollies, like those white rabbit lollies You suck on it and chew on it But Ecclesiastes is kind of like a book that is like a sand castle being washed away by the sea
[8:08] I think Ecclesiastes is God's wisdom for us when life is frustrating or confusing Maybe when time seems to just be an endless loop, you're not sure what's going on It's obvious from actually the preacher's very first words Let me read to you from the very beginning of Ecclesiastes 當他說是意義無,意義無,意義無, utterly meaningless, everything is meaningless That's how he speaks at the very beginning of his book 傳道書開始已經說了 在第一章第二節的傳道者說 虛空的虛空,虛空的虛空,凡事都是虛空 當他繼續訓練到這篇文,直到第三節的傳道者 都一直在埋怨 看他有多少的沮喪
[9:39] Ecclesiastes 2 verse 8, he says I amassed silver and gold for myself All the treasures of kings and provinces And in two verses later he says I denied myself nothing my eyes desired I refuse my heart, no pleasure Wealth, happiness, success That sounds like every Asian family's dream, doesn't it?
And yet it is not 恭喜發財 When the preacher looks carefully, he actually says Verse 11, everything was meaningless A chasing after the wind Nothing was gained under the sun And if this past year has felt a little bit like this for you Then you are not alone The Bible says life sometimes is frustrating So what will help us, PCBC, get through these uncertain times?
How will we make the most of our time?
[11:24] How will we spend our time wisely this new year?
And so in our passage in chapter 3 I want to share from the teacher 4 timely reflections he has to help us So I have four points to what I want to share today And firstly, I want to share that from verses 1 to 8 That poem that we heard, the teacher reminds us that in God's world Time is not only to be measured, but to be appreciated And the next slide, this is one of the earliest copies of Ecclesiastes chapter 3
[12:37] I know it's hard to read, but don't worry, you don't need to read it to notice something In this earliest copy of Ecclesiastes chapter Can you see actually how the word time, which is on the screen on your left, is marked off?
Compared to all the stuff that's been written before, here from chapter 3, the preacher stops complaining And I think appreciates the beauty of time And when we look at it in Chinese, notice how the poem, this poem that we read, it listed a whole range of contrast, right?
[19:41] This Happy New Year Let's not just measure time in Jesus Let's appreciate time in Jesus Are you for real preacher?
[20:32] How can I appreciate time? Have you seen my busy life? But keep reading Let's have a look at verse And here he says this He has made everything beautiful in its time He has also set eternity in the heart of people Yet they cannot fathom what God has done From beginning to end That's verse
This is a profound observation So I want us to notice the three other
[24:39] For example Song said it this way, Covid allowed me time to pause and conclude there was more to life than stuff, jobs or next step in life.
[24:50] He said he would like to trust the Lord in the past two years, in this situation, to allow him to be safe and safe to think of the life of God.
[25:01] He saw how God made everything beautiful in time. So, when you see that the Lord in the past two years, it can be a beautiful thing.
[25:29] Another brother, Billy, we are already familiar with. He said, in the past two years, I found that in the past two years, he was allowing me to experience the love of Jesus.
[25:42] So, he said, we love him because of God. Let's remind each other, amidst the struggles of life this year, God does bring beauty from our brokenness in his time.
[25:54] Even in our difficult times, we can recognize that God can use these times to turn into the beauty of God.
[26:05] The third point I want to see from the preacher is this, God has set eternity in our hearts. God has set eternity in our hearts.
[26:23] We see this in verse 11 of what we just read. Just in the second half. In the first half, we have seen this in verse 11 of what we just read. And when you read that, this is a very powerful phrase, isn't it?
[26:35] And I think what this verse is doing, what teachers are saying is that He's actually kind of, He's alluding to a much earlier time, all the way back to the book of Genesis, to our first parents in chapter 3.
[26:48] In chapter 3, 3, verse 11 says, Yeah, so I want to just notice in this little phrase that echoes back to the Garden of Eden.
[27:13] For example, in this verse, it says there's eternity set on our hearts. While our first parents, they had a desire to know everything and yearn for eternity, didn't they?
And what we see in the verse before 11, in verse 10, it says there, that there's a burden, a task that God has laid on the human race.
[27:58] In our translations, it says what it says, but in the original language, this phrase is literally, not the human race, but the children of Adam.
[32:56] Do you see, 時間是全是全是? ANSGENDARerd。
[34:13] At just the right time, He announces the kingdom of God and heals and shows signs and wonders. And at just the right time, He hands Himself over and dies on the cross for sinners.
[34:43] And so what the teacher in Ecclesiastes could never see, you and I now can because of Jesus Christ. In the evangelism, He is looking for the success of the Lord.
[34:58] But if you and me, we will see in Jesus' 10-11. The teacher could not fathom, right? Verse 11, what God has done from beginning to end.
[35:08] But now we can because we see Jesus died and rose again. So the people who have said that the Lord's work is not able to do it.
[35:19] But today, we will see the 10-11 of the gospel of the Holy Spirit. We will see that the Lord's work is always in the history of the Holy Spirit. And the gospel of the Holy Spirit is always in the gospel of the Holy Spirit.
[35:32] This coming year of the Tiger, it marks a new chapter for all of us, right? That the new year of the Holy Spirit is always in the life of the Holy Spirit.
[35:44] But what about you? What will you do with your time this coming year? What about you? What will you do with your time this coming year? If you are a visitor here or you are listening online and you are not yet a Christian, Is this year the time to seriously ask who is Jesus?
[36:03] If you are a visitor, or you are a new visitor, or you are in the house or in the internet, or you are in the internet, or you are in the internet, If you are not yet to see Jesus, this is the time to see Jesus?
[36:17] Maybe it is time to join the church's seekers course, or to ask a friend to share the gospel, read the Bible with you. If you are in the church's church, you are in the church's church, or you are in the church's church, or you are in the church's church, we will be able to find the church's church.
[36:34] If you have sat in these blue chairs for much of your life, but you have never confessed your sin and turned to Jesus, is it time to do that this year? If you are in the church's church, you have sat over the past few years, but I do not have any knowledge of Jesus.
[36:51] Will this year be a time to be sure to share your life? Or is it time for you as a Christian to really commit to God's family here at PCBC?
[37:03] We are already sure that we are faithful to the Lord. But is it a moment that we are really in the Holy Spirit?
[37:15] For some of you here, if God has been calling in your heart to do something for Him, is it time to give up something good for something better?
[37:26] Is it time to follow His call for you into ministry, into mission, into the marketplace? Those people may be willing to know God's certiminating에К and journey through time this year that we remember God's wisdom that we've heard today.
[38:14] As you discussed, remember this, there is a time for everything. And remember, let's not just measure our time and control it, but appreciate it.
[38:32] And remember, because in His beautiful timing, we have seen Jesus. Let's do whatever we can in our time to help others know Him too.
[38:59] Our Father in heaven, thank you for putting eternity into our hearts. Forgive us for chasing eternity in our house, or our career, or our children.
[39:15] Thank you that only Jesus Christ, who loved us and died for us, can fill our need for eternity in our hearts.
[39:37] And we pray all these things in Jesus' name.
[39:49] Amen. Amen.
