Ps William HC speaking from 1 Corinthians 10:1-11:1.
In 1 Cor 10:1– 11:1, Paul warns those loved in Christ to flee idolatry and to do all for the glory of God.
- Examples from Israel’s past failures (10:1-22)
- Warning: when God’s people defy him, they are destroyed (v1-11)
- Pride comes before the fall! (v12)
- Yet God is faithful and offers a way out of every temptation (v13)
- So dear friends, flee from idolatry (v14)
For eating and drinking have spiritual significance (v15-22)
Some scenarios the Corinthians faced (10:23–11:1)
- BBQ at the temple? No. (v23-24)
- Meat from the market for home? Yes. (v25)
- A complex situation: dining with non-Christian and Christian friends (v26-30)
Living for God's glory (Christian ethics):
- Does the Bible allow it for us today?
- Does my conscience allow it at this time?
- What is the impact on my Christian family? (Love > my knowledge)
- What is the effect on non-Christians? (Gospel > my rights)
- What is the effect on my spiritual life? (God’s glory > my freedom)
